Bryce Harper, Fenway and Father & Son Traditions

Bryce Harper came to Bean Town with the Washington Nationals and there isn’t a bigger fan of Harper than my son, Noah.

Noah has been wearing the Red Sox jersey since he was born, but he has been a faithful follower of Harper since he was in high school.

I wasn’t sure how I felt about him wearing his National’s shirt to Fenway. It is like betraying Red Sox nation!

Why? You ask….. Harper and Noah have everything in common, he thinks. He continually watches Bryce’s home run champ videos. They both bat left, so he is Noah’s inspiration.

Bryce was recently moved up into the major’s this year and when he was in the minors, Noah met him at a Fisher Cats game, after sending him a poignant letter expressing his wishes to meet him.

It is not hard to convince Brian to go to a major league game either and after a long week at work, he was eager to treat himself to a game.

Luckily, they scored Green Monster seats at a reduced price through stub-hub that made it irresistible, not to attend. For those who don’t know the Green Monster, those seats are highly coveted, high up on the wall and usually sold out. With our team not doing so great this year and the threat of rain, they were able to grab a few.

The whole family has been going to games for years, but every year they try to do a Father-Son date together that is full of tradition and memories.

The schedule looks like this-
3:00pm- Drive to Fenway and spend a grundle on parking
3:45pm Be the first to arrive for Red Sox Nation members.
4:00pm- Go to Batting Practice
5:00pm- Eat a Fenway Frank
6:00pm- Walk around Fenway admiring statues, memorabilia
7:00pm- Game
8:00pm- Eat ice-cream in a Red Sox helmet
9:00pm- 7th Inning Stretch
9:30pm- More Food

I finally made a book through Shutterfly that highlights our favorite tradition.

It features 10 years of games and now we are starting a new decade.
It is one of my favorite books that I own and I am sure it will become more valuable with time.

Here is a sneak peak.

I hope they continue going for years into the future.

But there is one requirement….Noah needs to get the right jersey on.

Salem, Cousins and the Witches

We had an action packed weekend. My little brother’s wife, Mary (Who is also our dentist) and their 11 year old son, Ford from Utah, came to stay with us before embarking on an East Coast Tour for his school class.

We packed in as much as we could pack in while they were here, showing them some sites that they were not scheduled for.

On the agenda yesterday was a trip to Salem, MA to see and learn about the witches.

We did the tourist thing and took the trolley around town. We visited the most recognizable sites to learn about the mystic world of the 1700′s.

Yes, these two guys are the same age- three months apart. Don’t let size fool you.

We had them both at nearly the same time, they lived in Nebraska at Dental School and we were in Iowa. They are about as opposite as the come, but it was fun to watch them interact with one another. We rarely see cousins, so this was a treat.

We headed to the Witches Museum where we saw a presentation Salem Witch Trials, pretty spooky stuff if you ask me.

I rarely go to Salem because it is difficult to get in and out of but once I am there I love it.
If you want a taste of some of the best architecture in America, you have to come here.

Most of This Old House on television is filmed here, because the houses are some of the oldest in the nation.

The streets of cobblestone, the federalist homes and the street cafe thrill my senses.

The best thing about living here, is the diversity around me. I never get tired of visiting or seeing the places around me. I learn something new every time and it is always better to do it with people you love!
