It is the New Year and with 2013 behind us and returning back from Southern Florida last night, I am finally ready to announce that I have chosen my word for 2014. It is one little word that I think will change my life for the better….Drum roll….ENGAGE!
I am not big on resolutions, I don’t intend to keep most of them, but that word is the one thing that I have been thinking about the last couple of months that I want to carry over.
I love the word engage and my kids hate it. Over the holidays, I would often say put down your phone and ENGAGE!
On our holiday trip, if people weren’t talking, I would say be engaged.
There is so much in the word for me-
1. For me it is putting down technology and engaging more with the world, nature and my soul.
That last sentence was hard to write as I freely admit, I love technology and everything about it….but I find when I travel, I am on my gadgets 1/8 of the time I am at home and I always feel so much more renewed. I want to keep that feeling with me.
So…..Brian and I decided to host a technology free zone at our home, because we are so sick of our kids snap chatting….the most useless form of social media and wasting time and streaming useless Disney videos of disrespectful kids that have no consequences or morals.
Kids can now earn time back by reading, exercising and working. Nobody is happy about it.
2. I want to be engaged more in books. The last couple of months I have read a couple of books that I have loved, and it has reminded me that I have not been engaged enough in that type of learning lately.
This goal includes continuing to read more scriptures, pondering and thinking about my life on a daily basis to receive inspiration in my life that is meaningful and meant to be.
3. I want to engage more with my kids and husband. I am hoping to be more calm and relaxed. I am hoping to make the home more of environment where they can engage in learning, loving and focusing on priorities with a purpose.
4. Finally, I am hoping we can get our family more engaged in the caring of other people. Making giving and serving a priority without having to think about it. Engaging full hearted with the poor, the needy and those around us need our gifts and skills.
So there you have it in a one word nutshell…..ENGAGE! I have to get off the computer now….and engage!
