Lot’s of things have been cooking at this household lately. I am looking forward to a peaceful November and reflecting on all of things that I am blessed with.
I think I might focus all my posts on gratitude and joy until the end of the year.
Today, I might answer some questions!
Why aren’t you blogging as much?
The heart is willing but the mind hasn’t been. Frankly, I got out of the habit and end up waking up and getting going and I forget. I forget that I have this journal online that I will definitely regret not blogging in.
My next excuse is some things have been so personal that I haven’t wanted to be transparent but I think I am over the mountain now and can get back to where I am and get writing again. Personally, it has been a rough, couple of months but I am feeling stronger now. Lot’s of different challenges presented themselves and I was forced to learn and grow.
On to lighter topics-
How can you travel so much?
Good question! The fact of the matter is that has been my life long passion and it is my top priority. I wanted to raise my kids all over the world, learning geography, history, life lessons etc. and I am doing just that.
We have sacrificed many worldly options and household needs to do it. Some days I complain about my ugly, well worn carpet and my lack of stylish clothes, but rarely. It is a priority to both Brian and I and already see the benefits of or choices.
How do we afford it?
Growing up in the travel industry has taught me all of the tricks of the trade. But the most important thing I can recommend is traveling in the off-season, getting on a points program like Marriott and Southwest and then work it. We are also fortunate that Brian travels a lot, so we have frequent flyer and that I still get a few benefits in the industry, like this past weekend when Princess Cruises paid for our weekend on the brand, new Royal Princess ship to check it out and preview it. I will do the honors anyway.
Finally, we have a travel account and I save like crazy in it for the big trips and you have to make a choice. Travel is expensive. This year, it came down between a new patio outside and carpet on the inside. I chose next years adventure over both.
Are you still homeschooling? Yes, I am homeschooling Noah, 7th grade. Chase is in high school, Hillary is in college now and Liz is in the 4th grade coming out next year.
It seems like you are so busy, how do you do it?
Really I am not so busy, I stay home when I am home. Perception may appear that way but my focus is home and family. I am not a shopper, I don’t leave the house much. I am a home body. When I am out, I prefer to be out and active. I take advantage of the situations that present themselves and I have been living a theme of saying YES and taking more chances on new opportunities when they arise. I continue to say NO when needed to things that don’t fit into my lifestyle.
Do you still shoot photography?
No, only as a hobby, it didn’t align with my long term values and conflicted with raising children, so I had to give things up. I am much happier just being an amateur. I am grateful that I was able to learn those skills and now own top of the line equipment. It makes every photo a sweeter experience.
I occasionally will take on a photography project but it is like one or two a year.
Where are you going next?
Next year I have a full travel schedule. I won’t begin to list but one of my goals is to sneak to the Dominican Republic to test out a new location with a charitable partner there who wants us to help build a small library in a poor community. Thinking and praying about that opportunity and whether it aligns with my goals. Education always aligns but I need to make sure we make the right choices.
