It seems like I am almost non-existent. But the truth is….I have been revamping my life.
I let many things go the last couple of years.
My health and my finances to name a few.
I have been trying to get both in tip top shape.
Last year, we didn’t budget well. We made the most money we have ever made…and spent the most money we have ever spent. Funny how that happens when you are not paying attention!
It is like our kids are just getting out of control expensive and the big years of college, missions and private school are among us.
It is not like I was buying cars, pools or even clothes! It was all necessities of life…although I have been sneaking in a massage or two to stay sane.
Revamping the Budget
This last week, I have been grinding the numbers and I am recommitted to a daily accounting of all of the numbers. Oh Joy to the New Year’s budgeting resolution.
I use You Need a Budget YNAB. It syncs to iPad and iPhone….so gees, you always know what you should spend.
It is somewhat refreshing to free yourself financially. I keep thinking if I could run my home like a small business….I would be in paradise….literally. All of the extra money spent on ridiculous things could allow me to go to somewhere fantastic.
I love seeing the potential of what we could save if we would cut down a little.
Revamping the Grocery Store Experience
Part of this years goal is to not eat out a lot.
That is one of our biggest financial drain and I don’t like processed food too much anyways.
Here is my brand new idea-
I am using a new grocery service, Peapod, that is actually delivering my groceries this year. Delivery is free in my area for two months.
I have waited for four years for it to spread from NYC and Boston to New England and it is here. It came last year, I am finally getting around to trying it.
This is an experiment to see if we will actually cook more and be more prepared in the kitchen.
Last week, was my first week and I loved the idea that I have all of my ingredients right there without multiple stops at the store for forgotten items. I cooked everyday off of my menu.
Here is the process:
I went through my recipes at All Recipes and made a menu. (Most of my menus come from that site.)
In the pro version of All Recipes, it makes a list of all of your ingredients for shopping.
While sitting at gymnastic lessons, I added all of the food to my Peapod iPad app. Throughout the week, I continued to add things as we ran out of items.
In another free, quiet, rare moment, I searched for the coupons online I needed and printed. I admit I never do that anymore and saved money handing the driver the coupons.
Shabang…Peapod showed up and delivered. I am sold.
I figure the delivery cost is one or two nights eating out each month and the convenience can’t be beat.
Now the question is can I maintain? Some years I have been great, last year…not so perfect.
I am happy so far with the changes we are making!
Did I mention the weather looks like this…so it is a perfect time to crunch the numbers!
