I am taking a few moments today to thank Stephen R. Covey for changing my life. I can date his influence clear back to when I was a teenager and the principles he taught have been used throughout the entire course of my life.
Covey was a Utah guy, a professor at my university and a member of the LDS church way before he was the giant man of leadership he is today.
His simple organizational behavior tools became the platform for our family master plan and his advice has helped me maintain and simplify my life putting the most important things first.
I have read a half dozen of his books.
I used his day planner for years when it launched in the mid 80’s until we finally went digital. We used to carry the big clunky day-planners and prioritize life with an A, B or C.
I recently pulled out one one of those planners that I saved and laughed at my journal and my life so prioritized. I still pride myself in that simple principle today.
Brian used to carry all of his money, like a wallet and his life in his day planner.
Miracle Story of Prayer involving the Day Planner # 1
Back in 1995, We were driving across the nation when we stopped at a payphone in Indiana to make a call… Yes from a payphone.
Brian left his day planner sitting right there.
We drove 2 hours to the hotel only to discover upon check in. No dayplanner= no wallet.
We drove back to where we thought we left it and all I could remember was an Adult Video and Book store near the gas station in the middle of no where. Without computers back then, we went on total brain power. My GPS mind got us back the gas station in the pouring rain, singing at the top of our lungs to stay awake after driving all day… to discover that the “Spicoli (Fast Times Ridgemont High guy) looking dude who worked there indeed brought it in and all of the contents was intact.
What a blessing that was! We drove back two more hours…now the day was 12 hours in a car…mostly in pouring rain.
He is going to kill me for posting this- but we must illustrate.
You would think that we/ Brian would have learned a lesson- Fast forward two more years.
Miracle Story of Prayer involving the Day Planner # 2
Back in 1997, He sat the Day Planner on top of our Honda Accord and drove down the road only to discover that it blew off somewhere.
The problem? We were leaving to London the next day. Brian now had no ID, no passport and we had lost money we had just gone to the bank for etc.
London 1997- Don’t judge I was 6 months pregnant and decked in BYU attire to the max!
We were dying….thinking we would have to cancel the trip and try and recoup the identification.
We said a prayer, many prayers and a couple of hours later and innocent 10 year old who had been out riding his bike had gathered all of the day-planner badly damaged, the money, the passport etc. together and called us off of phone number on the license.
I am not sure who the little boy was but he deserved a medal that day. He was honest and had integrity and did the right thing. Of course, Prayer was the key…again!
Now I use iCal my MacBook Pro for everything and love it- it syncs to my iPhone and iPad. I love more than anything, sending invitations to my husband from it so he never misses an event. I digress…..
Covey inspired me to be my best and to live my best life as a mother and a person.
He taught me to reach up and stretch.
Rest in Peace Stephen and God Bless! You will not be forgotten!
